As the publishing industry continues to evolve, efficiency and customization have become key differentiators. Whether you produce educational materials, Role Playing Game books such as Dungeon’s and Dragons, trade books for engineering or construction, or specialty publications such as lawbooks, one challenge remains the same: how to insert additional content or materials into books without slowing down your workflow and saving money in the process??
That’s where automated feed and insertion systems specially designed to address this need come into play.
Designed specifically for publishers and companies that sell books in quantity, these systems offer a seamless, high-speed solution to insert or affix items directly into books — all without manual labor or bottlenecks.
Sounds great eh? Let’s learn a little more below first.
What Is a Feed and Insertion System you ask?
Quite simply, a feed and insertion system automates the process of:
Feeding books into a production line
Opening them to a designated page or cover
Inserting or gluing items like stickers, maps, or supplemental sheets
Closing the book and moving it down the line
Whether you’re adding a fold-out map to a travel guide, affixing a sticker sheet inside a children’s workbook, or inserting a promotional code into a custom publication, this technology helps get the job done quickly and precisely.

Why Publishers Are Automating Book Insertion
Here are a few reasons more publishers are integrating feed and insertion systems into their production lines:
✅ Save Time and Labor
Manual insertion is time-consuming, error-prone, and costly at scale. Automation lets you process thousands of books per hour without compromising accuracy.
✅ Improve Accuracy and Consistency
Every book gets the right insert in the right place — no missed pages, no human error.
✅ Add Value to Your Books
Whether it’s bonus content, interactive materials, or campaign-specific items, inserting content directly into the book enhances both functionality and customer experience.
✅ Scale Customization
You can vary the inserts by SKU, language, market, or campaign — without slowing down production.

Pineberry Customized Affixing System for automating Book insertion for envelopes
Pineberry designed and manufactured a Customized Affixing System that was specifically built to take an envelope that was 4.25” x 8.75” and automatically affix or glue it directly to the inside back cover of the hard cover book. The glue was applied with 2-3 lines along the edge of the envelope and placed on the inside back cover of the book which was square to the book’s spine.
The system consisted off a customized transport system that is capable of transporting hard cover books and have our HSF-12 Friction Feeder place the envelope and glued with our glue system. #Affixing #books #envelope #frictionfeeder

What Can You Insert?
Feed and insertion systems are highly flexible and can handle a range of materials, such as:
Sticker or label sheets
Fold-out maps or schematics
QR code pages or login credentials
Coupons or promotional offers
Registration cards or compliance documentation
Depending on your needs, these items can be glued to the inside cover, tucked into a specific page, or inserted loosely between sections.

Who Uses These Systems?
While traditional automation has served packagers well, modern feed and insertion systems are built for publishers.
If you’re producing:
Educational books with supplemental worksheets
Custom books with regional or language-specific inserts
Guides, manuals, or kits that require added documentation
…then automating this step is a smart investment.
Key System Features to Consider
When selecting a feed and insertion system, look for:
Compatibility with different book sizes and bindings
Ability to insert or glue different types of items
Throughput speed to match your existing workflow
Simple integration with your finishing or fulfillment equipment
Optional camera systems for quality verification and insert tracking
Ready to Modernize Your Publishing Workflow?
If your team is still manually inserting items into books — or outsourcing this labor-intensive task — now is the time to explore automation.
A feed and insertion system doesn’t just save time; it increases your output, adds value to your products, and gives you the flexibility to customize content like never before.
