Child-resistant (CR) pouches are playing an increasingly important role in packaging across multiple industries. Whether used for pharmaceuticals, supplements, chemicals, or cannabis products, these pouches help protect consumers—especially children—while delivering convenience and compliance.
But when it comes to packaging automation, CR pouches present unique challenges. Their flexible, non-flat structure and varied contents demand equipment that’s both precise and adaptable. At Pineberry Manufacturing, we offer friction feeders and labeling systems, conveyors, and related equipment to design and build automation solutions specifically engineered to meet these challenges head-on.
What Are CR Pouches—and Where Are They Used?
CR pouches are designed with child-resistant features like resealable zippers or sliders that meet regulatory safety standards. They’re ideal for products that could be dangerous if accidentally ingested by children. According to FMI (Future Market Insights) The global market for child resistant locking pouches market is forecast to reach USD 1.5 billion by 2025 and a CAGR growth of 6.2%, reaching USD 2.7 billion by 2035. Which means the market and the application for CR Pouches and similar products are going to continue to grow.
Common Applications Include:
Pharmaceuticals: Both prescription and OTC medications often require CR packaging to prevent accidental overdoses.
Dietary Supplements: Gummy vitamins and chewables are especially popular in CR pouches for safe, resealable use.
Household Chemicals: Items like cleaners and pesticides benefit from secure packaging to avoid child exposure.
Personal Care Products: Products like mouthwash, essential oils, and cosmetics are increasingly packaged in CR pouches.
Other Uses: CR pouches are also used for batteries, electronics, cannabis edibles, and small hardware.
The Automation Challenge: Feeding Non-Flat Pouches

In a competitive and fast-evolving manufacturing environment or industry, the need to scale operations without causing costly disruptions is a top priority for printing and packaging professionals. From high-volume direct mail campaigns for marketing reach to complex labeling requirements most often found in pharmaceutical or CPG industries, the challenge remains the same: how do you grow your overall capacity and capabilities without grinding the line to a halt in the process?
The answer lies in strategic investments and planning in automation, modular systems, and being very smart about integration—allowing for seamless scaling while maintaining the continuity, quality, and speed today’s operations demand.
Scaling Smart: Avoiding Downtime While Growing Capabilities
In traditional production environments, scaling often meant lengthening downtime windows, reconfiguring entire systems, or purchasing new machinery altogether. This model is no longer viable for operations where every second lost translates into revenue leakage.
Instead, future-ready print and packaging operations adopt modular and automated systems that can be retrofitted or expanded with minimal disruption. For example, print-and-apply labeling systems can now be added inline with existing conveyors, using smart sensors to identify variable product sizes or SKUs. Similarly, automatic feeding and folding systems can be configured as standalone units or synced into existing PLC-driven systems without requiring a full plant reprogramming. Making a production managers responsibilities that much easier and less stressful.
Labeling: More Than Just a Sticker
Labels carry more than just product names. They deliver compliance information, variable data like batch or expiry dates, and serve as a critical touchpoint for brand identity. As labeling requirements become more complex—think serialized barcodes, multilingual instructions, or tamper-evident features—manufacturers are upgrading to intelligent labeling systems.
Modern label applicators now offer:
Vision systems to verify placement and orientation
Integration with ERP/WMS systems for real-time data for shipping labels or inventory control
High-speed servo motors that allow for micro-adjustments on the fly
These systems can be scaled incrementally—adding additional printheads or applicators to accommodate new SKUs or packaging formats without affecting overall line performance.
Feeding & Folding: Precision in Motion
When it comes to marketing materials, feeding and folding become mission-critical. Whether it’s inserting a coupon booklet into a box or folding an information leaflet into an envelope, precision and speed must be tightly controlled.
Future-proof systems in this category often include:
Friction feeders with adjustable settings for various paper stocks and booklet sizes
Vacuum conveyors for stable transport through cutting, folding, or gluing phases
Inline cameras and sensors to detect jams, doubles, or misfeeds
These units are often designed with integration in mind, meaning they can be added to an existing production line giving teams the ability to scale output or handle more complex assembly tasks without massive downtime.
Cutting & Placing: Adaptive Automation in Action
In operations where products need to be cut to size or components placed with accuracy—such as promotional stickers, RFID tags, or window patches—automation plays a critical role in future-proofing.
Advanced cutting and placing systems now feature:
Servo-driven rotary cutters that adapt on the fly to variable formats
Robotic arms or gantry pick-and-place systems for accurate positioning
Workflow software to auto-adjust settings between batches without manual input
Integration Is Key
Perhaps the most critical element in future-proofing is systems integration. Scalable packaging and print solutions are only as effective as their ability to communicate with upstream and downstream operations. That’s why today’s manufacturers are prioritizing:
API-ready software for integration with MES, ERP, or CRM tools
Unified control panels that oversee multiple systems and provide centralized diagnostics or programming
Remote support capabilities to reduce technician intervention and improve uptime
Conclusion: Build to Scale, Not to Replace
The most resilient and future-ready printing and packaging operations are not those that throw out the old and bring in the new every time a need arises. Instead, they invest in modular, intelligent, and integrative systems that allow them to scale horizontally—adding capabilities as needed—without stopping the flow of production.
From precise label placement to friction feeding marketing inserts, today’s solutions are more adaptable than ever. And in a world where agility and uptime dictate profitability, that adaptability is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity.
