Automated Tray Denesters for Food and Pharmaceutical Packaging

Eliminate manual tray handling. Automate your packaging line from stack to fill.
Pineberry tray denesters separate and dispense stacked trays one at a time — clamshells, boxes, cups, containers, wire baskets, and fiber trays — at up to 40 cycles per minute. Reduce labor cost, increase line speed, and eliminate repetitive strain injuries.
Serving food, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods packaging operations across North America and the US.

How Automated Tray Denesting Works
Tray denesters automate the separation and distribution of stacked trays. Instead of manually pulling trays from a stack, the denester picks one tray at a time and places it on your packaging line — continuously, at production speed.

Stack Loading
Operator loads a stack of nested trays into the denester magazine. Typical stack height: 12-48 inches depending on tray size. Multiple units can be loaded into the system. Some models support auto-feed from upstream stackers.

Dispensing
Separated trays are transferred to the downstream conveyor or positioning station. Timing synchronized with your filling, labeling, or sealing equipment.

What Tray Types Can Be Denested?
Pineberry denesters handle a wide range of tray materials and geometries. If your trays nest when stacked, they can likely be denested.
Additional integration capabilities: book binding lines, folding machines, vacuum conveyors, bottling lines, vertical carton insertion, and material handling systems.
Clamshells
Hinged plastic containers for produce, baked goods, deli items. Denesters open the clamshell partially during separation to prevent vacuum lock. Speed: 30-40 cycles/minute.
Boxes and Cartons
Paperboard boxes and folding cartons. Denester grippers handle both glued and lock-bottom cartons. Speed: 25-35 cycles/minute depending on box rigidity.
Cups and Containers
Plastic cups, portion cups, sauce containers. High-speed denesting via vacuum cups. Speed: 40+ cycles/minute for small cups.
Plastic Trays
Thermoformed trays for meat, seafood, produce packaging. Handles trays with dividers, compartments, and absorbent pads. Speed: 30-40 cycles/minute.
Wire Baskets
Metal wire baskets for frying and cooking applications. Mechanical grippers handle the basket rim. Speed: 20-30 cycles/minute.
Fiber Trays
Molded fiber trays made from bagasse or pulp. Growing demand for sustainable packaging. Denester configuration optimized for fiber stiffness and surface friction. Speed: 25-35 cycles/minute.
Industries Using Tray Denesters
Tray denesting automation is standard in high-volume food and pharmaceutical packaging operations. If you’re manually placing trays on your line, you’re losing speed and adding labor cost.

Food and Beverage Packaging
Typical products: Fresh produce (berries, salads), baked goods (muffins, cookies), deli items (cheese, meat), meal kits, prepared foods, condiments, sauces.
Tray types: Clamshells, plastic trays, fiber trays, portion cups.
Speed requirement: 30-40 cycles/minute to match downstream filling and sealing equipment.

Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Packaging
Typical products: Unit-dose packaging, blister packs, vial trays, tablet containers, supplement bottles.
Tray types: Plastic trays with compartments, clamshells, boxes.
Speed requirement: 20-35 cycles/minute. Cleanroom-compatible construction required for sterile environments.

Food Service and Distribution
Typical products: Pre-portioned ingredients, cooking baskets, serving containers, retail packaging.
Tray types: Wire baskets, fiber trays, clamshells, portion cups.
Speed requirement: 20-30 cycles/minute. Batch operations common.
How Fast Can You Denest Trays?
Speed depends on tray size, material, and nesting geometry. Typical production rates:
What affects denesting speed?
- Tray geometry — Deeper nests separate slower than shallow nests
- Material stiffness — Flexible trays require gentler handling, reducing speed
- Stack height — Taller stacks may require intermediate positioning, adding cycle time
- Downstream integration — Denester speed often matches filling or sealing equipment pace
Can you denest multiple trays simultaneously?
Yes. Multi-station denesters can handle up to 6 trays in parallel. Common in high-speed food packaging lines where a single denester can’t keep pace with downstream equipment.

Tray Denester Integration with Packaging Lines
Pineberry tray denesters integrate with upstream stacking systems and downstream filling, labeling, and packaging equipment. We design the denester to fit your existing line — not the other way around.
Upstream Equipment
Stack Loading Automation
Automatic stack feeders eliminate manual magazine loading. Operator loads a pallet of nested trays; auto-feeder transfers stacks to the denester magazine continuously.
Benefit: Reduce operator intervention frequency from every 15 minutes to every 2-3 hours.
Tray Stacking Stations
For operations that thermoform or mold trays on-site, automated stacking systems feed directly into the denester. Eliminates manual stack handling between forming and packaging.
Downstream Equipment
Filling Systems
Denester timing synchronized with filling equipment (volumetric fillers, piston fillers, auger fillers, multi-head weighers). Tray arrives at fill station exactly when filler is ready to dispense.
Conveyors
Denesters feed trays onto conveyor belts for transport to downstream stations. Conveyor speed matched to denesting cycle rate.
Labeling Systems
Pressure-sensitive labelers apply product labels, lot codes, and expiry dates to filled trays. Denester timing ensures consistent tray spacing for labeler registration.
Sealing and Lidding Equipment
Heat sealers, ultrasonic sealers, and snap-lid applicators seal filled trays. Denester buffer prevents line stoppages when sealer cycles are longer than denesting cycles.
Friction Feeders for Inserts
Insert packing slips, leaflets, or promotional materials into trays before or after filling.

Cartoning and Case Packing
Filled and sealed trays are transferred to cartoning equipment for secondary packaging, then case packers for shipping.
